Blue Jays' Merryweather Suffers Another Setback After Low A Rehab Game

It's been that kind of year for Blue Jays reliever Julian Merryweather. 

Merryweather—who's been been out of action for over four months—recently suffered another setback while working back from oblique injuries during a Low A Dunedin rehab game, Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said.

For now, the injury is being described as "general soreness." Merryweather will be re-evaluated on Saturday, per a team source, to determine the exact extent of his injury. 

The 29-year-old threw 17 pitches in his lone inning of work with the Dunedin Blue Jays on August 18, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out a batter. Merryweather was scheduled to pitch again Saturday, but his outing was cancelled after he was feeling sore.  

Injuries have plagued Merryweather for most of his career. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 for elbow troubles, but appeared to be on the mend before the oblique problems flared up in 2021. 

Merryweather—the lone return piece in the 2018 Josh Donaldson trade—remains on the 60-day injured list for the time being. The hard-throwing right-hander showed incredible stuff in four appearances in April, but as the setbacks continue, it grows increasingly unlikely he doesn't pitch for Toronto again this season.
