On Friday, Kylian Mbappe announced that he would be leaving Paris Saint-Germain, confirming reports from as early as February. The 25-year-old has opted not to sign a new contract, and will instead finally make the move to Real Madrid, although this deal has yet to be announced at this stage.

Losing Mbappe is a big blow for PSG, and also for Ligue 1, who have lost their biggest star. For the league, it’s the worst possible time for this news to have been announced, as they are set to lose out big time in a financial sense.

As reported by Diario AS, Ligue 1 does not yet have a buyer for the TV rights for the next four seasons, running from 2024-2028. They have been asking for €800m for the national package, which had already been an unobtainable amount, but with Mbappe’s departure, the price they demand could drop significantly.

It means that there would be less money in French football, not that Real Madrid will particularly. They can look forward to welcoming one of the world’s best players this summer, and now it just remains to be seen when his move is officially announced.
